Pride Center serves all of Youngstown's people

by Tom Copeland

Youngstown-The Pride Center of Greater Youngstown was founded in the winter of 1999, with the help, advice, and encouragement of members of the Pride Center of Akron.

After meeting for about a year in a private home, the center acquired office space in the First Unitarian Church of Youngstown. It is officially registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, which make it eligible for many grants and will make donations to the Pride Center tax-deductible for the donor.

The center is sponsoring a trip to Columbus Pride on June 28.

The Pride Center of Greater Youngstown aims to promote community development and a sense of security among LGBT and all questioning people in the Mahoning Valley through social, educational, and support programs and the establishment of a safe place for these programs to take place. This community center, where LGBT people and their non-gay allies may meet on common ground and without disguise, is organized and operated exclusively to educate and reduce prejudice and discrimination between the LGBT

and heterosexual communities---and to relieve the effects of such prejudice and discrimination.

The Pride Center of Greater Youngstown excludes no one. LGBT people and their · non-gay allies are equally welcome.

In addition to occasional parties and fund-raisers, the center holds business meetings (5-7 pm, first Saturday of the month), support meetings (7:30 pm every Wednesday), and kaffee klatsches, generally with invited speakers (7-10 pm, second Saturday)....

The immediate schedule of events is: Saturday, June 8: Kaffee Klatsch on the topic of alcohol addiction and co-dependence. Call 330-7932428 for directions.
